When Is It Time to Replace Your Front Door Locks?
Ready for replacement – definitely
Ready for replacement – possibly
A very basic question – how long has your current front door lock been in place – if the answer is over ten years you quite probably need to look seriously at a replacement – in recent years with the advent of multi-point locking systems the technology of locks has moved on dramatically, as has the awareness of the would be thief in methods to force such locks.
As burglars have become more proficient at their trade the need for more secure locks has grown.
The front door lock has one main purpose to keep your family and valuables safe, It needs to be strong, durable and above all else, long lasting, but how long is long lasting and when is time to change.
Points to review and obvious comments
Operating Condition – a sticking or hard to operate key is often a sign that the inner workings of your lock have become worn out or rusted, not surprising really when you
consider how many daily uses they endure. If the mechanism is starting break down any would be thief will be more than happy to lend a helping hand to reduce the life of your lock, after all it will be easier for him if the parts are easier to break.
Worse still if your lock has become really stiff the nightmare scenario is that your key snaps in the lock when the lock is only partially engaged and is still in the locked position – if your lock is already damaged because of misuse etc. it may well be will be weak and therefore susceptible to further break-ins this is the time to call in the experts if it cannot be satisfactorily repaired immediate replacement should be considered
Of course you know where they all are – don’t you – maybe not – Here at GF HQ we covered the whole key issue in an article on our Eurosecure site back last year for the average family we assessed that twenty plus keys could easily be the norm are you still quite as sure you know where they all are?
It seems pretty obvious but does not always happen but if keys are permanently misplaced, locks should be changed. It is better for your peace of mind and probably cheaper that you know where all the keys are rather than run the risk of having them fall into the hands of an unwanted wisitor..
Necessity or not
It seems a ridiculous thing to say, but even if there is no sign of damage and your locks are regularly serviced and working well it is still worth changing your locks every few years – why – changing technology.
The internet is great for many things but sometimes there is simply too much information – try looking for “lock bumping or snapping” on “U” Tube if the burglar can use it for updating his information and entry techniques you need to be one step ahead.
